Association of serum iron and total iron binding capacity in rural children

Original Article Background & objectives: To assess the nutritional iron status and anemia prevalence in rural children of Warangal district, A.P. INDIA. Methods: We have studied serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) relation ship in 50 rural children in the age group of 8-12 years. Results: As expected there was a highly significant increased levels of serum iron and a lower TIBC. The Mean ± SD serum iron concentration was 270.8840 ± 88.0737 and TIBC was 24.2790 ±10.9848. There was highly significant inverse relationship between serum iron and TIBC with a p value of 0.0001. Interpretation & conclusion:Iron deficiency and anemia appear to be an important public health problem among children and the effective actions aimed at the prevention and control of this deficiency are strongly recommended.
